Overview
Firstly – MesaStila is not in Yogyakarta – a 2 hour drive in fact, but then you won’t find genuine coffee plantations in the heart of a city. The alternative nature of MesaStila almost demands inclusion into Ethos Travels alternative hotels.
Conceived as an estate with full coffee plantation in 1922, the hotel still produces robusta beans (along with organic produce which is used in MesaStila’s gourmet restaurant). Each of MesaStila 26 unique villas is reconstructed from original Javanese housing, and offers views of the area’s 8 volcanoes.
The location is enchanting and the service relaxed, if not haphazard, but this is a place to meander. The resort’s location offers relatively easy access to the prime attractions of Borobudur and Prambanan, and a local privately run steam train offers unique trips through the Javanese countryside, albeit on a jam karet (rubber time) schedule! A unique hotel, and well worth the diversion from established Java itineraries.
