The 1½ hour drive from Tambolaka Airport to Nihiwatu Resort reveals a side of Indonesia many of us thought had disappeared. No Starbucks, advertising billboards or ‘Hello Misters’, but instead groups of smiling barefooted schoolchildren, enterprising small shops selling bensin (petrol) and jackfruit, and one obscurely located and underused set of traffic lights.

On the last half hour of the journey as you travel through mountainous vistas, the panoramas are briefly interrupted by water-tanks and village medical centres etched with ‘The Sumba Foundation’, Nihiwatu’s lasting legacy devoted to improving the quality of life for the indigenous people of Sumba.
