Koh Chang, literally meaning Elephant Island, is the second largest island in Thailand and sits just south of the city of Trat close to the Cambodian border. Despite its size the island is still mainly underdeveloped.
A relatively new tourist destination, the island has seen a mini-boom in recent years with the accommodation on offer changing from budget bungalows to excellent luxury resorts. Koh Chang along with 52 other islands make up the Koh Chang National Marine Park. All resorts in the park are restricted to building no more than three stories, to keep the landscape as unspoilt as possible.
The majority of the island is protected from development meaning that deserted beaches, breathtaking coastlines and virgin rainforest all lay waiting to be discovered. The surrounding crystal waters are home to a host of marine life and magnificent coral reefs.
Within easy reach of Bangkok, and with its relaxed atmosphere, Koh Chang is an excellent alternative to the islands of the south. |
