 MORE INFORMATION

As with many of the best destinations in Asia, Krabi Province started off as a discreet backpackers hangout. Overflow tourists from Phuket and gap year students ventured in search of picture perfect beaches, limestone cliffs and crystal clear waters

As the reputation grew of stunning beaches at Rai Leh and Ao Nang, the inevitable happened and hotels moved in. However, Krabi has taken onboard many of the lessons from Phuket’s development, and limited the areas growth. You won’t encounter many hawkers, girlie bars, and even sunloungers have been banned from beaches to keep them pristine. There’s a sense of space to the region, and a beauty provided by the limestone rocks and caves that dot the shore.

Krabi Airport was intended to open up Krabi Province when it opened in 1999, but like the rest of the area it remains sleepy, and underused. However, as it is only a 3 hour drive to Phuket, it makes an excellent two-centre beach holiday if you like a combination of the lively (Phuket) and the sublime (Krabi!).
